Nowitna River in Summer

Refuge conservation plans are called “comprehensive conservation plans” (CCPs).

  • Comprehensive Conservation Plan

The Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act requires a comprehensive conservation plan for all refuges in Alaska. The revised plan for the three refuges was completed in 2009 and provides direction for managing the refuges by identifying the types and level of activities that can occur on the refuge. Revision of the comprehensive conservation plan began in April 2007. Public scoping began fall 2007.  Public meetings took place in communities near the refuge during the fall and early winter 2007. The revised plan guides management of the refuge for the next 15 years. The draft revised plan was released for public review in September 2008 and was available for public review until December 15, 2008. Public comments were received in writing and at public meetings held in local area communities. The comments were considered and the final plan was approved by the Alaska Regional Director on April 27, 2009.
