Join refuge volunteers as we work on seasonal projects to restore and reconstruct our native tallgrass prairie and oak savanna ecosystems!
Would you like to celebrate bison and the prairie ecosystem that sustains them? Come enjoy bison talks with an expert, book readings and signings by local authors, music, weaver's guild demonstrations, rope making demonstrations, games, crafts and much more! This event has something for everyone, and is fun for all ages. We will even have a bison chip throwing contest towards the end of the day. A lunch, including bison burgers, is available for purchase from 11am-1pm.
Come help us collect and tag butterflies on their migration south through the refuge! Calling all citizen scientists! Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is looking for volunteers to assist refuge staff in capturing, tagging, and releasing monarch butterflies. The tags help us, and the Monarch Watch program, learn more about these amazing insects' long migration to Mexico and back. Pre-registration is required, and limited to the first 100 participants. Register by calling 515-994-3400 or emailing Brianna at firstname.lastname@example.org.
