Monte Vista Refuge is open from sunrise to sunset.
Directions to Monte Vista Refuge: Drive south on State Hwy 15 (Gunbarrel Road) for 6 miles to the entrance of the auto tour route. The small office and visitor contact station at the Refuge is located at the start of the auto tour route. The visitor contact station is volunteer run and not open most days. The San Luis Valley NWR Complex Headquarters Office is open Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, closed weekends and federal holidays.
Directions to the Complex Headquarters: From the junction of HWYs 17 and 160, drive east on HWY 160, 0.5 miles to Adams Lane. Turn and drive south, stopping at the railroad crossing. Proceed carefully across the railroad tracks. Follow the dirt road for about 1 mile parallel to the railroad tracks to the east. The road will turn south. Stay on the main dirt road to the 2-story tan building well marked with signs.
When you plan for a trip to the Refuge, wear sturdy shoes for land excursions and dress for the weather. Bringing water, food, binoculars, field guides, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and anything else that might make the outdoor experience more enjoyable.
Areas throughout the Refuge are designated as closed year round to protect migrating waterfowl or for public safety. Maps of these areas are available at the refuge office kiosk and under the map section.

Listen for the sandhill crane’s call - “gar-oo-oo”- as it flies overhead looking for places to feed and rest. Look for groups of cranes in the Refuge’s marshes and grasslands, refueling for their flight to the next feeding and resting grounds.
