Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis
RedTailedHawk 512x415
Red-tailed hawks are extraordinarily adaptive birds, and because of this they are the most common hawk in North America and are year-round residents of Modoc NWR. They can often be seen perched in one of the few tall trees on the Refuge or hunting in the irrigated meadows. They are also commonly seen scanning the landscape for prey from the tops of power lines. Anytime you visit the Refuge, you are certain to have excellent opportunities to view and photograph Red-tailed hawks.
