    The refuge has several lizard species that are easy to find and interesting to watch. Anoles and skinks are easy to watch in almost any area.

  • Snakes


    There are over 40 species of snakes on the refuge, but you will have to look hard to see any of them.

  • Turtles

    Gopher Tortoise

    Turtles of the refuge are mostly aquatic and semi-aquatic species such as the Peninsula cooter, chicken turtle, snapping turtle, striped mud turtle and stinkpot. The gopher tortoise is the only truly terrestrial species. The gopher tortoise is the only tortoise in North America that naturally ranges east of the Mississippi River.
