Birdwatching

β€œIn the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.” – Baba Dioum, 1968 Speech to the General Assembly of the International Union for Conservation of Nature

Apart from being a great national wildlife refuge, McNary has an excellent environmental education program. Run almost exclusively by volunteers, each year approximately 2,000 students participate in hands-on learning programs, including those on aquatic insects, shrub-steppe habitat, invertebrates, birds and many, many more topics. These outdoor classrooms are coordinated, organized and hosted at McNary NWR by the Friends of the Mid-Columbia River Wildlife Refuges. Run as field trips to the refuge, these classes are in high demand, so high that the Friends have to hold a lottery for the available spaces. Applications are due by December 1, with the lottery held a few days later.
