Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge's Purpose Statement - “ … for use as an inviolate sanctuary, or for any other management purposes, for migratory birds.”

The refuge will continue to protect and foster diverse aquatic, avian and faunal communities to be observed and explored by current and future generations.  Habitat management techniques will restore fragmented short-grass prairie to provide cohesive, healthy plant communities that best support migratory birds and other resident wildlife.  Through partnerships with other agencies, interest groups, landowners, and local communities the refuge will establish a range of environmental education programs, promote high quality wildlife-dependent recreational opportunities, attract new visitors, build a strong refuge support base, and enhance the local community.  Local residents and visitors will view the refuge with a sense of pride and value their relationships and accomplishments with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

The refuge is committed to accomplishing refuge goals and significantly contributing to the mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System.
