  • Mariana Trench Marine National Monument

    In January 2009, the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument was established by Presidential Proclamation. Located in the Mariana Archipelago east of the Philippines, the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument protects approximately 95,216 square miles of submerged lands and waters.

  • Pale, Beady-Eyed Crab Named for Harry Potter

    To honor a collector whose species-finding skills bordered on the magical, biologists have named a newfound crab after characters from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. The crab, dubbed Harryplax severus, lives in deep rubble beds, or patches of dead coral fragments, along the coasts of Guam.
