Field Trips

Field Trips

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is an ideal location for area educators, home school groups, and summer camps to get students outdoors and incorporate the environment into their curriculum. Group leaders are encouraged to utilize the refuge as an outdoor classroom for lessons aligned with various academic standards. There is no cost to visit the refuge with your students!

School Field Trips

Field trips to the refuge are free and typically self-guided. Depending on selected dates, rangers may be available to lead a refuge introduction or additional programming. Due to the high demand of our free field trip visits and limited space, all educators and group leaders are required to schedule their group's trip in advance with refuge staff. Scheduling is available during the following times:

  • Fall 2020 Field Trips (Sep. - Nov.) - Scheduling opens August 17, 2020
  • Winter 2020-2021 Field Trips may be scheduled at any time.
  • Spring 2021 Field Trips (March - May) - Scheduling opens January 4, 2021

Homeschool Resources

Homeschool families/groups are welcome to visit John Heinz NWR and encouraged to view it as an extension of their home classrooms. A number of resources are available for use by educators both on and off refuge:

Homeschool Educators Guide - this guide includes information about planning a visit, materials for loan, lesson plans, activity sheets, digital resources and more!

Lesson Plans - Additional refuge-specific lesson plans

Loan Boxes - The refuge maintains two educational loan boxes, Mammals of Pennsylvania and Birds of Pennsylvania, that can be borrowed free of charge.

In addition to regular public education programs (see events calendar), the refuge hosts an annual Nature Discovery Day for homeschool and cyber school students in the Fall.
