2017 YCC Summer Youth Employment

The Youth Conservation Corps is a federally funded work-learn-earn program aimed at developing an appreciation and understanding of the Nation’s environmental and natural heritage. The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is now accepting applications for Summer 2017.

The program is eight weeks long, from June 19 through August 10, 2017. The team will work 32 hours per week (Monday through Thursday, 7:30am- 4:00pm).

The hourly wage is $10.00 for the youth team members. Team member applicants must be between 15 and 18 years old (must be 15 by June 19, and have not reached their 19th birthday by August 10, 2017).

Additional hires include a team leader and an assistant leader.  The leaders must be at least 20 years old and have completed two years of college.  Prior experience with the YCC program is usefully, but not necessary. Background checks are mandatory.

Work projects include landscaping, trail clearing and building, trail sign installation and maintenance, fence and gate maintenance. Special environmental awareness activities are incorporated into the work schedule.

A strong interest in the outdoors and natural resources management is recommended. Participants are expected to be able to participate in physical work during periods of adverse weather conditions. They will be exposed to insects, poison oak and ivy, and a variety of wildlife.

Participants are expected to be available for work for the entire program. They must provide their own transportation to and from work. Public transportation is not available.

Program is dependent upon federal funding.
