Long-term Monitoring:

Wintering Waterfowl - Grand Cote is located in the southern portion of the Mississippi flyway. Each fall and winter Refuge staff conduct waterfowl surveys and record the different species of waterfowl and their abundance on the refuge. Once per year a mid-winter waterfowl count is conducted during the same week as other refuges, state owned wildlife management areas and aerial surveys. This mid-winter survey is intended to give a snapshot in time of where the waterfowl occur throughout the flyway. Waterfowl counts on Grand Cote NWR often number in the tens of thousands, with numbers commonly approaching 100,000.
