Just For Kids

“Many children delight in the small and inconspicuous”

 - Rachel Carson, The Sense of Wonder

Research shows that connecting to nature helps children develop healthy bodies and minds. National Wildlife Refuges are a great place for families to enjoy and explore nature.

Hey kids! What can you and your family do at Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge (NWR)?
  • Go fishing.
  • Take a nature walk and look for signs of wildlife.
  • Hike on the Garden City Levee Trail and explore the boardwalk into the forest.
  • Explore the Refuge in a boat.
  • Paddle a canoe or kayak on a paddle trail.
  • Grab your binoculars and wildlife watch.
  • Take your camera and photograph landscapes or wildlife.
  • Look for an alligator. Remember never to approach or feed them!
  • See how many different kinds of birds you can find.

Tell your parents about the Bayou Teche Black Bear Festival in Franklin, LA where you can play games, have some good eats, and enjoy wildlife and bear related activities, like the "Beary Patch" Louisiana Black Bear Game!

We will offer FREE nature hikes and pontoon boat and canoe tours of Bayou Teche NWR during the festival weekend. Look for our U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tent near the Willow St. bridge on the banks of Bayou Teche at the festival and visit us there to sign up for a tour.
