Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge is ideal for family-friendly recreation.
Make the outdoors part of your everyday life.

Pack a lunch!
Explore the Ridge Trail Site at Bayou Sauvage NWR, then enjoy a picnic lunch under a covered pavilion.

Take a hike!
Discover native habitat and wildlife. Stroll along the half-mile boardwalk or the 6-mile out-and-back trail along the Maxent Levee.

How To Get There

Try these tips:
  • Listen closely to birds and insects, the wind moving past different leaves, and the sounds of earth underfoot.
  • Remaining silent helps you tune in to nature and increases your chances of viewing wildlife.
  • Give all of your attention to a tree, a flower, a rock. How does it look, smell, feel?
  • Bring a camera to photograph species you can identify later.
  • Bring a pair of binoculars.
  • Take time to look under rocks for insects.
  • Bring a basic field guide so you can learn about the birds or butterflies you see.
  • The best way to enjoy a nature walk is to take your time.
