Sea Turtle Watch Programs

loggerhead-Dean_Bagely-513x344

The best time to view sea turtles is in June and July when guided, night-time sea turtle watch programs are offered. Reservations for the programs are required

Turtle Walks
Walks begin with an educational program about Florida's sea turtles and sea turtle nesting on the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. Participants are then given the opportunity to view a Loggerhead sea turtle nesting on the beach. These educational programs are conducted under a state permit and should not be attempted without a state permitted guide.

You should able to walk up to a half a mile to 3 miles on the beach. Bring water and insect spray to repel mosquitoes. The entire program lasts an average of 3-hours. Because of the late program time and the potentially long walk on the beach, this program is not recommended for children under age 7, the elderly or disabled. Flashlights, filming and photography are not permitted.

Offered in June and July
9:00 pm – 1:00 am depending on when a Loggerhead sea turtle is found nesting

Turtle Digs
Digs are an hour long educational program held at the Brevard County Barrier Island Center by the Friends of the Carr Refuge. Participants are then given an opportunity to observe an emerged nest that has been dug up to learn the survival rate. Occasionally hatchlings are found and released into the ocean at the end of the program.

Offered in August and early September
Contact the Friends of the Carr Refuge at this email address, for times and dates.
