Ranger Programs

Joining a ranger for a short walk, interpretive talk, or guided tidepooling is a great way to learn more about Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Self-directed Junior Biologist books, and Let’s Go Outside backpacks are also available to enhance your visit.

Programs are offered daily at Islands & Ocean Visitor Center June 11 – August 19 during the 2017 Summer Season.

  • Beluga Slough Ranger-Led Walks

    Walks are offered daily, June 11 – August 19 (2017 Summer Season). Lasting about 1 hour, the walk will follow the trail from the Visitor Center along Beluga Slough. Wheelchair accessible.

    Please meet the ranger or refuge volunteer on the outside patio at Islands & Ocean Visitor Center. No reservations are required.

  • Natural History Talks

    Natural History Talks are offered three times a week, June 11 – August 12 (2017 Summer Season). These talks are approximately 30 minutes long, with each program focusing either on one of the amazing animals that inhabit our Refuge or stories from the Refuge’s rich history. Please meet in our Seminar Room in the Visitor Center. No reservations required.

  • Alaska Maritime Map Talks

    Map talks are offered four days a week, June 11 – August 12 (2017 Summer Season). These talks are approximately 15 minutes long, and each program focuses on stories from the Refuge’s rich history over time and space. Please meet at the map in the Visitor Center. No reservations required.

  • Historical Talks - WWII

    Historical talks are offered three times a week, June 11 – August 12 (2017 Summer Season). These talks are approximately 30 minutes long, and share the stories of the Aleutian Islands Campaign during WWII. Please meet in our Seminar Room in the Visitor Center. No reservations required.

  • Guided Tidepooling

    Join Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge staff at Bishop's Beach for guided tidepooling! Tidepooling is offered two weeks, on Monday and Tuesday mornings, June 26 – August 8 (2017 Summer Season). We will meet at Bishop's Beach parking lot and will walk out to the tidepools. Rubber boots recommended. Tidepool guides provided. This is a free event for all ages. No reservations required.


    2 Hours Mondays and Tuesdays

  • Pre-K Puffins

    This educational program is designed for children ages 2 through 5. Join a Refuge Ranger for an hour and a half of story time, crafts, and early learning activities centered on marine sciences. Please meet in our Seminar Room in the Visitor Center. No reservations required.

    10:00-11:30am Last Thursday of Each Month.
