Ranger Programs

Joining a ranger for a short walk, interpretive talk, or guided tidepool program is a great way to learn more about Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Self-directed Junior Biologist books are also available at the front desk to enhance your visit.

Programs are offered daily at Islands & Ocean Visitor Center June 7 – August 20 during the 2021 Summer Season.

  • Beluga Slough Ranger-Led Walks


    Walks are offered daily, June 7 – August 20 (2021 Summer Season). Lasting about 1 hour, the walk will follow the trail from the Visitor Center along Beluga Slough. Wheelchair/Stroller accessible.

    Please meet the ranger or refuge volunteer on the outside patio at Islands & Ocean Visitor Center. No reservations are required.

  • Guided Tidepooling


    Join Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge staff at Bishop's Beach for a 2 hour guided tidepooling experience (look for orange vests)! Tidepooling is offered as the times and tides allow. We will meet at Bishop's Beach parking lot and will walk out to the tidepools. Rubber boots needed. Tidepool identification guides provided. This is a free event for all ages. No reservations required. Walk is about 1 mile to the tidepools. Rocks can be slippery and uneven.

  • Talks

    Drop in for table talks about Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Topics can range from the wildlife that lives here, the Alaska Native people, volcanos, birds, or what the biologists do.

  • Pre-K Puffins

    This educational program is designed for children ages 2 through 5. Join a Refuge Ranger for an hour and a half of story time, crafts, and early learning activities centered on marine sciences. Starting June 2021, programs will resume in person. Find some past programs on the refuge Facebook page

    10:00-11:00 am and 12:00 - 1:00 pm Last Thursday of Each Month.
    Please see events calendar for dates and times. For September 2021, we will have 2 identical programs at two different times to help reduce the number of participants. Program will be outside -- dress for the weather!
