Abstract: This dataset was developed to represent Maine streams that have been assessed by the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission for the existence of Atlantic salmon habitat. The data consists of stream centerlines coded to describe the year, type and extent of survey completed on each stream, and whether or not the stream contains juvenile salmon rearing habitat. Some streams have had detailed surveys completed, and others have only brief narrative surveys described primarily in the Comment field in this dataset. This data is referred to as Level 4, or general habitat survey data, to be contrasted with the Level 3 habitat data which contains more detailed data for individual habitat units, and the Level 2 data which contains even more detail by habitat unit.

This dataset was developed using stream centerlines of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission RiverKilometer stream network based primarily on data sources developed at a scale of 1:24,000.  Attributes were coded based on earlier versions of this data, and include information gathered from Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission biologists and data derived from GIS data queries.

This dataset contains lines representing Maine streams surveyed in whole or in part by the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in assessing Atlantic salmon habitat.  Streams included in this dataset are shown as centerlines representing nearly the entire length of each stream.  The lines are meant to show which streams have had any type of survey, not the extent of each survey; the attribute EXTENT provides that information.

In general, the stream centerlines represented here are meant to be accurate to within approximately 10 meters, but may be based in some cases on data that no longer accurately represents the form of their streams.  This data is not meant to represent the most accurate possible stream centerlines, but is meant to be used for relatively small-scale mapping (1:15,000 - 1:3,000,000) and for reference in a Geographic Information System by staff of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission and others involved in Atlantic Salmon research, management and conservation.

Stream centerlines were copied from the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission RiverKilometer stream networks for all streams that have undergone any assessment for the existence of Atlantic salmon habitat.  The stream centerlines were coded by spatially joining existing point data to them, and then editing to update where necessary.  The existing point data, referred to as Level 4 data, consisted of a point at the mouth of each stream containing information about assessment work on that stream, including the year, person and agency responsible, extent, survey type, stream and drainage names, as well as the assessment of whether or not juvenile Atlantic salmon rearing habitat exists there.  The data formerly associated with points was instead associated with stream centerlines to make mapping more effective and data queries easier.
