This dataset was developed using Trimble differential global positioning system (GPS) devices, and is intended to be accurate for the features collected, but is not meant to capture all similar points (tributaries, springs, obstructions, access points, landmarks) for particular river drainages.  Survey data was collected using a data library that limited errors in the field.

This dataset contains points representing various landmarks of interest in assessing and managing Atlantic salmon habitat, and is not meant to encompass all tributaries, springs, obstructions, or landmarks within particular river drainages.  This dataset contains data for portions of the Aroostook, Dennys, Ducktap, East Machias, Kennebec, Machias, Narraguagus, Passagassawakeag, Penobscot, Pleasant, Presumpscot, Sheepscot, St. George, Union and Tunk River watersheds. The survey used sub-meter GPS receivers to map points. There are other tributaries in the watersheds that have not yet been surveyed.

2 - 5 meters (with differential correction) .  In general PDOP values for the receivers were kept below 4.0 and Signal-to-Noise Ratio was greater than 6.0, resulting in sub-meter accuracy.  During some parts of the survey the PDOP mask was increased to values of greater than 4.0 due to dense forest cover and elevation masks.  Base station files were acquired from the University of Maine Community Base Station.

GPS files of points were created from individual river surveys using Trimble Pro, Pro-XL and GeoExplorer GPS receivers to represent points of interest and to capture feature attribute data. These data files were combined together, stored in an ESRI Personal Geodatabase and checked for inconsistencies.

Process description:
Points were collected, and attribute data recorded, with Trimble differential global positioning system (GPS) devices, allowing for sub-meter accuracy when signal reception was best, and accuracy otherwise of 2-5 meters.  Attribute data entry was controlled by a data dictionary which limited errors, but allowed for explanatory text comments.  Tributaries, springs, obstructions, access points, and other landmarks were identified for some, but not all streams within the subject watersheds.  GPS files were converted to ESRI shapefiles, combined, stored in an ESRI personal geodatabase, and were edited to correct attribute data only. 
A field (Select) was added to allow display of all non-"Bend" points.  Labels were created for all points with a value in the Label field, and these labels were converted to annotation as the personal geodatabase feature class PointsOfInterest_Anno.  These annotation labels are edited versions of the contents of the Comment and Comment2  fields.
