DEP_eelgrass2018CascoBay Eelgrass survey of Casco Bay. In June 2018, Casco Bay was flown and photographed. Photography was timed near low tides with low wind velocity, good water clarity, and maximum biomass of eelgrass. These factors aid in the detection of the subtidal portion of a bed. Polygons delineating stands of eelgrass were screen digitized and coded using a four category scale of percent cover. Cover Class values: 1 = 0% to 10% cover, 2 = 10% to 40% cover, 3 = 40% to 70% cover, 4 = 70% to 100% cover. Verification was carried out by boat, on foot, and by plane. Though dense patches of eelgrass approximately 6 meters in diameter and less can be identified under good conditions and in some cases were mapped, a conservative estimate of the minimum mapping unit is 150 square meters. This represents a stand of approximately 14 meters in diameter. See DMR 2013 layer below. 2018

IFW_DWA This data set includes deer wintering areas in organized townships that qualify as Significant Wildlife Habitat under Maine's Natural Resources Protection Act. Deer Wintering Areas (DWAs) are forested areas used by deer when (a) snow gets more than 12 inches deep in the open and in hardwood stands, (b) the depth that deer sink into the snow exceeds 8 inches in the open and in hardwood stands, and (c) mean daily temperature is below 32 degrees Farenheit. This data set includes DWAs in organized townships that qualify as Significant Wildlife Habitat under Maine's Natural Resources Protection Act as mapped by MDIFW Regional Biologists. The data are generated from survey records and local professional knowledge. Redfin pickerel are listed as Endangered and swamp darter are listed as Threatened under Maine's Endangered Species Act.
