Information on Attending the Ae‘o (Hawaiian Stilt) Virtual Public Meeting and Hearing

  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has scheduled a virtual public meeting to give the public an opportunity to learn more about the proposed reclassification of the ae‘o (Hawaiian stilt) from endangered to threatened status and the associated proposed 4(d) rule. The Service will hold the virtual public meeting and hearing via the Zoom online platform so that participants can attend remotely.

    The virtual public meeting is scheduled for July 7, 2021, from 5:00 - 8:00pm Hawaii Time (HST). The virtual public meeting will consist of a public informational meeting from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. HST, followed by a public hearing from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. HT.

    During the virtual public meeting, attendees can join by computer or phone to learn about the proposed downlisting. The virtual public meeting will start with a brief presentation by Service staff followed by an opportunity for attendees to ask questions.

    Formal public comments may be submitted and will be recorded during the public hearing portion of the meeting (6:00 - 8:00 p.m. HT). Commenters may have an allotted time period to provide comments, and the order of commenters will be based on meeting registration.     We recommend that members of the public log into the Zoom meeting platform 5 minutes prior to the beginning of the meeting to ensure that they can connect. If using the phone-only option, participants will be able to listen to the virtual public meeting, but they will not view the presentation. Instructions will be given regarding how participants will be able to provide their comments.

    Instructions for Attending the Virtual Public Meeting:

    For Participants Joining by Zoom Web Platform or Zoom App:

    1. Please pre-register using the link provided below.

    *If you plan on offering a formal verbal public comment during the public hearing portion (6:00 to 8:00 p.m. HT) of the virtual public meeting, please indicate that when registering.

    *Additionally, please note that submissions merely stating support for, or opposition to, the action under consideration without providing supporting information, although noted, will not be considered in making a determination, as section 4(b)(1)(A) of the Endangered Species Act directs that determinations as to whether any species is an endangered or a threatened species must be made "solely on the basis of the best scientific and commercial data available."

    2. After registration, participants will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
    3. On the day of the meeting, please join using the information contained in your confirmation email.

    For Participants Joining by Phone:

    1. Register for the meeting (see above). On the day of your meeting, call in using one of the toll-free phone numbers listed below. You will be prompted to enter your Meeting ID. Enter your Meeting ID from your confirmation email and press the # key.
    2. You will then be prompted: "Enter your Participant ID followed by #. Otherwise just press #." Phone-only participants will not receive an individualized Participant ID, so just press the # key.
    3. You will be directly joined to the meeting. If the meeting has not started, you will be on hold until the meeting begins.

    The USFWS is committed to providing access to the virtual public meeting for all participants. Closed captioning will be available during the public meeting. Further, a full audio and video recording and transcript of the public meeting will be posted online at after the meeting. Participants will also have access to live audio during the public meeting via their telephone or computer speakers.
