In 2000, with bipartisan support, the U.S. Congress established the Puget Sound and Coastal Washington Hatchery Reform Project. Led by independent scientists and supported by state, tribal, federal and private sector leaders, the project is a science-based reform of our hatchery system to achieve two goals: Helping to conserve naturally spawning salmon and steelhead populations and supporting sustainable fisheries.
