Closure in Effect: on both Refuge Units

Visit for the latest on project updates and access to the Refuge

UPDATE: A detour to the Carty Unit is in place (estimated until Oct. 2019). To access the Refuge, please follow temporary orange construction detour signs placed in town instead of the permanent brown directional signs.

Beginning March 18, 2019, construction will begin to replace the existing single-lane bridge that provides access over Lake River to the Auto Tour Route and the Kiwa Trail at the River 'S' Unit of the Refuge. The new bridge will be two lanes wide and will cross over both the railroad tracks and the river.

During construction (March 18, 2019 - July 2020), access to the Auto Tour Route will be limited to weekends only. This includes both vehicle traffic and pedestrians. The reason for this is that the new bridge will be constructed next to the existing bridge. There is limited space for crews to operate construction equipment while interfacing with the railroad and public traffic.

In conjunction with this closure, the Carty Unit's Oaks to Wetlands Trail will be closed beyond the big oak overlook (where the nature pave ends)  from March 18, 2019 - July 2019, while coniferous trees are removed to enhance oak woodland habitat.

The Refuge Office will remain open during the closures, Monday - Friday, 7:30 - 3:30 PM per staffing. For questions or more information, contact the Refuge Office at 360-887-4106 and ask for Project Leader, Chris Lapp.
