The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is following federal, state, and local public health authority guidance to implement a phased approach to increase public access to Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.

The campgrounds at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge reopened public access to the 2021 Camping Season. Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge reopened public access to Crab Orchard Lake Campground, Crab Orchard Marina, Blue Heron and Little Grassy Campgrounds and Marinas.

Please note these changes at the campground are in compliance with state guidance:

  • All visitors must wear mask when physical distancing of 6 feet apart cannot reasonably be maintained.
  • Campsites can only accommodate the single group of registered guest to that campsite.
  • Campfires limited to the single group occupying that campsite.
  • Campers are encouraged use any self-contained restroom in their own camper for restroom or shower.
  • Limited showers and restrooms available.

More than 12 miles of trails are available for hiking and the 14-mile auto tour route is open for cars and bikes within CDC social distancing guidance.

The health and safety of our visitors, volunteers and employees remains our number one priority and the following facilities or areas remain closed until further notice:

  • Crab Orchard Lake Beach
  • Visitor center remains closed, just the front lobby is open at this time for visitors to buy refuge passes and information.

We are excited to welcome you back into the 2021 camping season but do ask that you follow current CDC safe practices by maintaining a safe distance between yourself and other groups; washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and most importantly, staying home if you feel sick. Staff are working to maintain clean, safe, and healthy facilities in accordance with federal, state and local guidance.
