Potential Algal Bloom

Algal Bloom Cascade Pond 520x289

Alert to hunters and anglers at Kootenai NWR

A potentially harmful algal bloom has been detected on Cascade Pond on the northwest corner of Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge. This pond is being evaluated and if confirmed, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can produce toxins that can cause serious illness in pets, other animals and humans.  The algae may be blue, green, orange, red or brown. Hunters and angler should take precautions if consuming wildlife that may have used this pond. The refuge is currently evaluating the status of other ponds.

For more information of cyanobacteria, visit the CDC at www.cdc.gov/habs/ or the EPA at www2.epa.gov/nutrient-policy-data/cyanohabs
