SOME TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES - REFUGE LANDS ARE OPEN

PL Closure Map

Pocosin Lakes NWR announces temporary road closures on the Pungo Unit.  (download map)

If you are planning a trip to the Pungo Unit, please check the status for refuge road conditions and temporary road closures by calling 252-796-3004 ext. 225.  Additional updates will be provided on the N.C. National Wildlife Refuge Facebook page.  The refuge roads are temporarily closed if conditions are determined to be unsafe for vehicles. The recent heavy rainfalls and high levels of traffic on some of the refuge roads have caused deep rutting, pooled water and other unsafe conditions on the dirt roads.  Please follow all refuge signs for your safety and to reduce disturbance to the wintering waterfowl and other wildlife.

Refuge lands remain open for authorized activities including hunting, fishing and wildlife observation and photography.

USE YOUR MANNERS and BASIC COMMON SENSE!

Be especially aware during hunting season, primarily deer hunting, BE SEEN & HEARD. Hunters please watch carefully for other refuge visitors.

When viewing wildlife, for the safety of yourself and your family, as well as the wildlife, ALWAYS VIEW FROM A SAFE DISTANCE! If you see a change in the behavior of the wildlife (they move away, etc.), you are TOO CLOSE!  Learn more about tips for safety during bear encounters at -  https://bearwise.org/bear-safety-tips/bear-encounter/

Please remember that all traffic laws apply on Refuge roads. Seat belts, car seats for children, etc. - whatever is required by the State on a public highway is required on the Refuge.
