Firewood on Swanson River Road

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) is expanding the personal use firewood collection permit area to include the deck of cut trees on the west side of Swanson River Road, ¼ mile south of Swanson River Landing (0.15 miles past Swan Lake Road turn off). Firewood will be available at this location, and some firewood is still available along Ski Hill Road, until May 15 or until the current supply of decked wood is depleted. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 response, permits with maps and all special conditions can only be obtained by contacting the Refuge at (907) 262-7021, and dialing “0” for the operator. No permits will be issued in-person. All existing permits are automatically extended and expanded to include the Swanson River Road decked wood.

Collection of firewood is limited to trees in decks. Standing trees may not be felled. Vehicles are prohibited beyond the shoulders of the road. ATVs are prohibited. Permits allow collection of up to five cords of firewood for personal, non-commercial use per household. All other wood cutting on the Refuge is prohibited, except dead and down wood may be used for campfires while camping on the Refuge. Please use care when driving on area roads as they are currently very soft due to ongoing break up.

We urge everyone to do their part when visiting Kenai National Wildlife Refuge by following CDC guidance and State of Alaska health mandates to prevent the spread of infectious diseases: maintain a safe distance between yourself and other groups; wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and most importantly, stay home if you feel sick. For further information call (907) 262-7021.
