Operational Changes due to COVID-19:

In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the health and safety of our visitors and volunteers, the visitor center and observation buildings are currently closed.

Trails, boat launches, refuge roads, and open spaces on the refuge are open as they usually are this time of year.  If you find that a parking lot is full, please come back at a later time or find another part of the refuge to enjoy.

While the visitor center and observation buildings are temporarily closed, visitor center trails, outdoor photo blinds, and portable toilets are open and accessible to visitors daily, 9:00-5:00.

If you are trying to purchase an America The Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, please call the visitor center for more information at (256) 350-6639 to schedule a time for us to issue you a pass.

Please remember to practice proper social distancing and follow all CDC guidelines while visiting the refuge.  Pack out any litter you might bring with you.

For refuge-related questions, please call (256) 350-6639, 9:00-5:00.

Refuge rules, maps, and trail guides can be accessed on our website ( by clicking the "Visit" tab, the "Plan Your Visit" tab.
