Road Closures/Visitor Center Building Closed

Road and Trail Closures:

The refuge sustained heavy tree damage from a thunderstorm and microburst on 6/12/2021.  Several refuge roads and trails will be closed this week as refuge crews use heavy equipment and chainsaws to clear debris.  Please stay off closed trails and roads for your own safety and to allow crews space to work safely.

For your safety, the Visitor Center area of the refuge (and it's trails) will remain closed Tuesday (6/15/2021) as refuge crews finish cleaning up using chainsaws and heavy equipment.  If you need assistance please call (256) 350-6639.

There are currently no temporary road closures.  All roads/gates are opened/closed according to the gate schedule posted on website's "Plan Your Visit" tab.

Operational Changes due to COVID-19:

In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the health and safety of our visitors and volunteers, the visitor center and observation buildings are currently closed.

Trails, boat launches, refuge roads, and open spaces on the refuge are open as they usually are this time of year.  If you find that a parking lot is full, please come back at a later time or find another part of the refuge to enjoy.

While the visitor center and observation buildings are temporarily closed, visitor center trails, outdoor photo blinds, and portable toilets are open and accessible to visitors Tuesday-Saturday, 9:00-4:00, March through October.  The Visitor Center grounds are closed on Sunday and Monday.

If you are trying to purchase an America The Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, please call the visitor center for more information at (256) 350-6639 to schedule a time for us to issue you a pass.

Please remember to practice proper social distancing and follow all CDC guidelines while visiting the refuge.  Pack out any litter you might bring with you.

For refuge-related questions, please call (256) 350-6639.
