ALERT - South Pungo Road Project to begin June 2019

South Pungo Road Project to begin June 2019

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge will be raising the elevation of 2 miles of South Pungo Road on the Pungo Unit of the Refuge in the Hyde County portion beginning in June 2019.  This project will close a 2 mile section of S. Pungo Road between Van Staalduinen Road and Hyde Park Road to raise the road and improve the road surface.  Unfortunately, we'll have to close South Pungo Road to Refuge visitors for several months to do the work.  The remaining public roads of the Pungo Unit can be accessed via Pat's Road to D Canal Road to South Lake Road. South Pungo Road can become muddy and even impassable in places during substantial rain events.  We expect this project to improve the road and alleviate those issues, making your visit to the refuge more enjoyable.
