September 19, 2018 (NER 18-23)

The initial application period for elk hunters interested in obtaining a permit for the National Elk Refuge closes on Friday, September 21, with the results of the computerized random draw to be announced on Tuesday morning, September 25.

The application process for the Refuge permit for elk hunting is done online in partnership with the Wyoming Game & Fish Department through their Access Yes! Hunter Management Area Program. There are four options for obtaining a Refuge permit to hunt elk. The first opportunity is to apply during the initial draw application period, which runs from August 1 through September 21 this year. Applicants are allowed to enter the drawing for one of 11 hunt periods. Period 7, which runs from November 22 through November 24, is only open to youth hunters ages 12 through 17 years old.

Starting at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25, hunters will have the second opportunity to secure a Refuge permit by selecting from any of the permits left over from the initial draw.

A full description of the application process and other permit opportunities, as well as Refuge season dates, regulations, and additional information can be found on the elk hunting web link. Also available on the web link is a printable, four-age Refuge regulation and information brochure for the 2018 elk hunting season (Adobe PDF).
