West Mims Fire Dictates Closure of Two Refuge Entrances

The West Mims Fire was a lightning-caused fire, first reported on April 6, 2017.  The fire is burning on the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and adjacent lands.

The Main Entrance (Suwannee Canal Recreation Area), Stephen C. Foster State Park, the Pocket, and the Suwannee River Sill are CLOSED to all public access. 

The Wilderness Canoe Trail overnight stops are currently closed.  Reservations are not being taken at this time.

The refuge has put in place a BURN BAN for all campfires and charcoal grills.  This includes the Stephen C. Foster State Park, all overnight stops on the Wilderness Canoe Trail System, and at the Main Entrance to the refuge.

The Wilderness Canoe Trail overnight stops are currently closed.  Reservations are not being taken at this time.

The Stephen C. Foster State Park, the Pocket, and the Suwannee River Sill are currently closed.  

The Suwannee Canal Recreation Area is currently closed
