3rd Annual Family Fishing Festival at Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge Huge Success

The 3rd Annual Family Fishing Festival at Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge hosted by SW Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge staff, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Education and Inland Fisheries staff, and Friends of the Southwest Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge Complex and Wetlands. Over a 100 men, women and children enjoyed fishing the 6.5 acres of ponds at Cameron Prairie this past Saturday, April 8, 2017.  A minimum of 74 channel catfish, 64 largemouth bass, and 49 Bluegill were caught throughout the day.  The fantastic weather really added to the enjoyment of families spending time together outdoors.

Many Thanks to all of this year’s sponsors, exhibitors and volunteers who helped make this Festival a day to remember.  The Friends of the SW LA NWR Complex and Wetlands, Coca Cola Company, and Roy Bailey Construction Company funded and furnished the drinks, food, grill to cook the hotdogs, and the commemorative Golf towels. Exhibitors included the Contraband Flycasters, USFWS Ecological Services Program, Jeff Ferguson, Master Certified Casting Instructor, and Fred Hannie, author and nationally recognized fly tier of exceptionally realistic looking “flies”.

Dedicated volunteers from the Friends of the SW LA NWR Complex and Wetlands, Cameron Parish 4-H Junior Leaders, and community volunteers who regularly assist at Cameron Prairie NWR were instrumental in assisting agency staff with Festival preparations, set-up and operations, as well as the end of the day disassembly.
