 There will be numerous activities all weekend long.  

Scouting Days for hunting seasons starts Friday, Sept. 22-24, 2017

 

Saginaw, MI- The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge will be hosting several events on our Open House Weekend which will be held September 22nd – 24th.

 

Friday, September 22nd   

Opportunities to Scout for Hunts: Hunting season is around the corner.  This is a perfect opportunity to access all of the refuge in search of the best hunting locations. Goose Hunters will want to check out the scramble river zone and current land zones. This is also an opportunity for deer hunters to scout prior to the upcoming reserved hunts and trapping areas. All closed areas are open for this weekend.

*Family Night Hike: Held at Green Point Environmental Learning Center at 7PM. This will be a great way to explore the refuge without lights! Free. Geared towards ages 8 and up. Bug repellent recommended.

Saturday, September 23rd  

Wild Goose Chase 5K Run/Walk: Organized by the Friends of Shiawassee NWR. This 5K is a grass, dirt and gravel loop taking place at 9AM on Saturday at the Ferguson Bayou Trailhead. Registration forms can be downloaded on our Wild Goose Chase webpage. Cost $20 (without T-shirt) after September 11th, including on race day. All ages.  

Free Family Backyard Field Day: This free event takes place from 10AM - 2 PM at Green Point Environmental Learning Center (3010 Maple Street, Saginaw, MI). Activities include fishing, dip-netting and crafts and fun for the whole family. Refuge Staff will be present along with law enforcement.  Everything is free of charge and open to all ages.

Evening (Guided) Kayak Tour: Sponsored by the Flint River Watershed Coalition, we will be offering two different trips across two days. The first will be offered at 4PM on Saturday, September 23rd. Both trips will venture into the refuge. This event is for ages 10 and up (space is limited). This is a free event and pre-registration is required. To register please email: friendsofshiawasseenwr@gmail.com. Bringing bug repellent and water is recommended. Tours last between 2-3 hours. 

Sunday, September 24th

Morning (Guided) Kayak Tour: Also sponsored by the Flint River Watershed Coalition. The second Kayak trip will be offered at 9AM on Sunday, September 24th. This trip will venture into areas typically closed to visitors. This event is for ages 10 and up (space is limited). This is a free event and pre-registration is required. To register please email: friendsofshiawasseenwr@gmail.com. Bringing bug repellent and water is recommended. Tours last between 2-3 hours. 

Sunday Nature Hikes: 

Birding on the Refuge Hike at the Woodland Trail will begin at 8AM. This walk will be held by Friends of Shiawassee NWR, Board Member, Jeffery Sommer.

Bring guides, binoculars, bug repellent and water to either hike.
