August 11, 2018 - Discover the night sky from Assateague Island! In celebration of the Perseid Meteor Shower, the refuge will remain open all night. Start your evening with the NASA Astronomy and Night Sky Summer Series.

Overnight Star Gazing

Visitors who plan to stay all night to view the meteor shower must enter the refuge no later than 10:00pm; only beach access and parking will remain open. Please be aware that there is no camping on the refuge and visitors must be engaged in stargazing to remain on the beach after hours. Public access to trails and all other visitor facilities is prohibited after 10pm. Campfires are also prohibited after 10pm to enhance nighttime viewing opportunities.


The entrance gate will close at 10pm and there will be no re-admittance until 5am. Visitors may leave the refuge at anytime by driving up to the gate, which will open automatically.

 

Astronomy & Night Sky Summer Series

7:30pm, 8:00pm & 8:30pm - Start your evening at the Herbert H Bateman Education Center Auditorium for NASA's Astronomy 101 presentation. Space is limited to 140 per session.

8:30pm-9:45pm - Head to the beach (parking lot #1) to join the Delmarva Space Sciences Foundation and Assateague Island National Seashore for stargazing with telescopes and binoculars. Subject to cancellation due to inclement weather.
