2016 Hunt Program Updates

Deer Hunt
Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge Deer Hunt (Virginia Hunt Guide hunt # 701)

 
Public deer hunting by shotgun and bow on Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, in designated areas for the dates listed below. Either-sex deer may be taken all season, per state and federal regulations. Hunting conditions could be considered “rigorous.” First time hunters are encouraged to visit the Refuge and attend scouting day to familiarize themselves with hunting conditions. During the hunt, some areas may close early or be closed completely due to weather, road conditions, emergency operations or state regulations. There is a refuge fee of $15.00.
 

Follow these steps to register

1. go to www.GoOutdoorsVirginia.com

2. Select "Purchase a License"

3.  Log-in to your account or make an account if you have not done so.

4. Scroll down through your personal information until you locate a blue button for "Purchase individual License".

5. On the next page, scroll down to "Quota Hunt applications/permits."

6. Locate "Great Dismal Swamp NWR Deer-Permit."

7.  Select blue button "Add to Cart."

8.  Continue to check-out and pay.

  9. Reprint your license showing this Add-on permit.

9. Note:  It may take 72 hours to receive an email to your maps, regulations, and permit copy.  We will allow you to hunt with a paper copy of your updated Hunt License showing you have added Great Dismal Swamp Deer Hunt as an add-on.  You can print out a map and regulations copy here.

• Scouting date: September 24, 2016
• Hunt dates: October 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, and November 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 2016  (permittees hunt  eleven days)
• Application due: There is no application deadline for the Deer Hunt; you can register online up to the last day of the hunt. Know that late applications will miss some of the available hunt dates. 

  

 
Bear Hunt
Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge Bear Hunt (Virginia Hunt Guide hunt # 501)

 
Shotgun hunting (slugs only) for black bears on Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, in designated areas of the Virginia portion of the refuge for the dates listed below. A maximum harvest limit of 20 bears is imposed on this hunt, and therefore the number of hunt days could be reduced as this quota is approached (however, this has never occurred). Hunting conditions could be considered “rigorous.” First time hunters are encouraged to visit the Refuge and attend scouting day to familiarize themselves with hunting conditions. 

New for 2016 Bear Hunt:  

  • Hunt limited to 100 hunters.
  • Application due: There is no application deadline for the Bear Hunt; you can register online up to the last day of the hunt. Know that late applications will miss some of the available hunt dates. 

Follow  these step-by-step instructions to register:

1. Go to www.dgif.virginia.gov/hunting/quota-hunts

2. On Quota Hunts page select "Apply for Quota Hunt." 

3. Log into your DGIF customer account or create an account if you have not already done so.

4. On your account information page, scroll down and select blue button "Apply for Quota Hunt."

5. On the next page select "Great Dismal Swamp NWR - 501" and then select the blue button "Add to cart."

6. Continue to payment page.

• Scouting date: November 10, 2016 (also a deer hunt permit can be purchased for additional access to hunt areas prior to the scouting day; see deer hunt # 701. 
• Hunt dates: November 11, 12, 18, 19, 2016 (permittees hunt four days)

Handicap Hunt Permits

Hunters that have a state issued handicap hunters license may request a refuge Handicap Hunt permit. The hunter must also have a refuge hunt permit.  There is no additional fee for the Handicap Hunt permit.
 
The permit will allow the handicap hunter to reserve an area to hunt in the designated handicap hunt zone in the Jericho Ditch entrance. 
 
Contact the refuge headquarters during business hours for more information or to request the Handicap Hunt Permit.

Hunt-dog Retrieval Permit

 
Qualified persons may purchase a hunt-dog retrieval permit which allows access to retrieval radio-collard hunt dogs that have roamed onto refuge property. The permit fee is $25.00.  Contact the refuge headquarters during business hours for more information or a permit application.

Note: Hunting with dogs is not allowed on refuge property.
