Pinckney Island NWR is a 4,053-acre refuge that includes Pinckney Island, Corn Island, Big and Little Harry Islands, Buzzard Island, and numerous small hammocks. Pinckney is the largest of the islands and the only one open to public use. The refuge entrance is located on the north side of U.S. 278, between the two bridges that connect Hilton Head Island to the mainland.   

Pinckney Island NWR is open 7 days a week, during daylight hours (no overnight use or camping). The automatic, electric gate typically opens a little before actual sunrise and closes approximately 30 minutes after sunset. The refuge is unstaffed and there are no public amenities such as restrooms, drinking water, or shelters for inclement weather.


From I-95: Take SC Exit 8 east towards Hilton Head Island approximately 16 miles to the entrance gate on the left.

From Hilton Head Island: Exit the island via US 278 West, and the refuge entrance will be on your right in approximately 1/2 mile.
