World Migratory Bird Day and 75th Anniversary of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

Event - Birdwatching May 12, 2018 - “Year of the Bird” is the conservation theme for this year’s World Migratory Bird Day celebration. It complements well, the 75th Anniversary of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, originally established May 13, 1943 to provide habitat for migratory birds (with an emphasis on conserving greater snow geese).

From 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge teams up with the Chincoteague Natural History Association to offer visitors a fun-filled day of family friendly activities. The historic Assateague Lighthouse opens for climbs at 9:00 AM. Come build a birdhouse or enjoy a special movie, shown throughout the day. At Noon, we’ll conduct the Children’s Art Contest Award Ceremony. Be in the refuge auditorium at 1:00 PM, where staff from Assateague State Park will present the ever popular “Scales and Tales”, live raptors and reptiles program. Stick around for a taste of the Anniversary cake at 2:00 PM in the classroom.
