Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located in the heart of the prairie pothole region of the northern Great Plains. Sand Lake NWR is an important resting and nesting place for migratory waterfowl. Up to 1 million snow geese and ½ million ducks can pass through the immediate Sand Lake area every spring and fall. Giant Canada geese and many duck species nest at Sand Lake during the summer months.
