    The Refuge, along with other federal agencies, experienced a lapse in appropriations that affected operations in both January and December. Other highlights included a busy fire season, the implementation of mandatory Chronic Wasting Disease sampling for elk hunters, and a fun L.L. Bean photo shoot for the company's holiday catalog.

    The National Elk Refuge refilled the Refuge Manager position in the spring. Also making headlines was a record visitation total for the winter sleigh ride program, spring flooding along the Gros Ventre River, and the passing of a Total Solar Eclipse through the Jackson Hole valley.

    Most notable in 2016: our Refuge Manager, Steve Kallin, announced his retirement from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, ending 39 years of federal service in the wildlife profession. Kallin served as Manager at the National Elk Refuge from June 10, 2007 through January 3, 2017. Thanks for all your hard work and leadership, Steve!
