Open House Public Meeting

Refuge Landscape 512 x 219The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will hold a public open house on    May 1, 5:30 - 7:30 pm at the Refuge Visitor Center regarding four step-down management plans for the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The public comment period begins April 17 and ends May 16, 2013.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is engaged in a National Environmental Policy Act review regarding four “step-down” management plans for the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Complex. This is a standard process for national wildlife refuges. The plans include the three Refuges located in the Denver metropolitan area, which are the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Two Ponds, and Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuges. The step-down plans listed below will be finalized and implemented in summer 2013.

• Habitat Management Plan (HMP) – Provides additional details regarding specific strategies and implementation schedules for meeting wildlife and habitat goals found in the Refuge’s 1996 Comprehensive Management Plan;
• Prairie Dog Management Plan (PDMP) – Outlines methods to control black-tailed prairie dog populations. This plan provides a transparent decision-making process and information on the methods that will be used to control and maintain a healthy and balanced population of prairie dogs on the Refuge;
• Fire Management Plan (FMP) – Provides policy direction for wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire activities on all three Refuges to promote a healthy native habitat for wildlife; and
• Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPMP) – Provides a broad strategy for combating invasive plant species and weed control focusing on early detection and a rapid response program for species with a high potential for spread.

On May 1, 2013, the Service will hold a meeting to hear comments from the public regarding these step-down plans. The open forum meeting will be held from 5:30 – 7:30 pm in the Refuge Visitor Center, located at 6550 Gateway Road in Commerce City, Colorado. During this time, the public will have an opportunity to learn more about the plans and provide their comments, which will be collected for consideration in the final plans.
