Crane and colt

Refuge habitat supports a wide variety of bird species including white-faced ibis, grebes, bitterns, ruffed and sharp-tailed grouse, raptors, and many species of songbirds. A great number of waterbirds use the refuge during the spring, summer, and fall.

  • Sandhill Cranes

    To many visitors, Grays Lake means sandhill cranes. In some years, over 200 pairs nest here. The refuge also serves as a staging area where cranes gather prior to migrating south for the winter.
