Where the Wild Birds Are

Nov. 17, 2017 -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management have released a 5-year study of three diving bird species that use federal waters in the mid-Atlantic during winter and migration. Satellite tags allowed biologists to track northern gannets, surf scoters and red-throated loons throughout their entire range. The goal of the study is to help wildlife managers and energy companies make decisions about where to construct offshore wind facilities to minimize impacts to marine birds. It is one of the most comprehensive satellite tracking studies of marine birds ever conducted in this part of the world.
