A New Generation: Celebrating the return of lake trout spawning at Allegheny National Fish Hatchery in PA

Following an eight-year production pause, the business of lake trout spawning is booming once more at Allegheny National Fish Hatchery in Pennsylvania. Service biologists and local community members are celebrating the first successful lake trout spawning season, producing more than 2 million fertilized eggs since the hatchery closed due to extensive renovations following the detection of a viral fish disease at the hatchery in 2005. National fish hatcheries like Allegheny collectively contribute to a sport and commercial fishery industry valued at more than $3.6 billion in the U.S.
