Lists of Northeast Species

A candidate species is a species for which we have enough information to warrant proposing them for listing under the Endangered Species Act, but we are precluded from doing so by higher listing priorities.

Petitioned Species

Under the Endangered Species Act, anyone can petition the the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list, delist, or downlist a species.  A list of species that occur in the Northeast Region that have been petitioned for a change in status can be found here.

Threatened and Endangered Species

Under the Endangered Species Act, species may be listed as either endangered or threatened. "Endangered" means a species is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. "Threatened" means a species is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future.

See list of all species in Northeast Region that are listed as threatened or endangered, proposed for listing, candidates for listing or delisted (April 2013). You can also create a custom report of species by doing an advanced search.

Find current recovery plans for species under the responsibility of the Northeast Region. (Select the species' scientific name and scroll down to the Recovery section of the page.)

Spotlight Species

In carrying out our mission, we will track our accomplishments and measure our progress through a representative group of spotlight species that have detailed conservation action plans.

Select a species' name from the drop down menu and scroll down to the Actions section of the page:
