Things to See and Do On Your Own

There are so many awesome things to see and do at the National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center and on local national wildlife refuges! You may explore on your own, or you may plan to participate in any of our scheduled activities. We offer a variety of programming ranging from Art Expos to preschooler activities. Join us! You'll be glad you did!


It's great fun to adventure on your own... But, if you prefer to join a group or have more of a teaching environment, join us for one of our many Guided Tours and Scheduled Programs.

Another option is to use our On-cell system, which provides a virtual guide for you at many of our locations.

Pea Island Visitor Center Stop by and visit our friendly volunteers. They can answer your questions and provide whatever information you need! Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge 9AM - 4PM daily

4 mile long Service Road around North Pond The Service Road is quite popular. But, it's a long, hot, dry walk in the summertime with ferocious insects! Be prepared! Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Daylight Hours
12+ miles of pristine beach You may park within the right-of-way for NC Highway 12 and walk over the dunes at any location along the road. Do not enter any areas signed as "CLOSED", as we post areas for nesting birds and turtles during the warmer months. Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Daylight Hours
New Inlet Boating Access New Inlet is no longer an inlet, but it proivdes the only sound acces on the refuge for boats. Only shallow-draft boats will float here, and the wind tide seriously affects the depth of water. Sometimes, paddlers have to walk their boats back to the shore! Salt Flats Wildlife Trail Salt Flats Trail is a short walk to an observation platform that overlooks both the Salt Flats (lots of glasswort) and the north end of North Pond. Pocosin Lakes Visitor Center and Interpretation This informative little Visitor Center is run by volunteers, so it may be closed when volunteers are not available. Stop by and see our exhibits or take a few minutes to watch the film!
