Caption: Juvenile Green Herons at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. The Green Heron is one of the few bird species that use tools to attract food. While in or near shallow water they sometimes use twigs or sticks to lure fish. At other times they'll drop feathers, insects or other floating objects to tempt fish to the surface.
Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of six national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex. Pocosin Lakes Visitor Center, located in Columbia, NC, is open 9am to 4pm whenever volunteer staffing is available
