Caption: Refuge managers at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge monitor groundwater levels on a regular basis - and you can, too! The US Geologic Survey installed real-time monitoring wells that are available online click this link The wells show what the water levels are doing below the ground as a result of precipitation and evapotranspiration. Right now, the groundwater levels are about two feet below the land surface as plants are growing and using a lot of water!
Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of six national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex. Pocosin Lakes Visitor Center, located in Columbia, NC, is open 9am to 4pm whenever volunteer staffing is available.
