Caption: Wild Olive (Osmanthus americanus) is a drought tolerant shrub or small tree with evergreen leaves and very dense wood. It occurs on well-drained soil and Dare County, North Carolina is as far north as it grows. It has sweet-smelling flowers that bloom in the spring and develop into fruit that persist on the plant through the fall. The fruit is eaten by birds and small mammals.
