Caption: On Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, as it is on other regional national wildlife refuges and across North America in general, Red-tailed Hawks are some of the most commonly seen hawks. They scour fields from many perches including fence posts, telephone poles and high trees. They also circle fields looking for their main diet of small mammals, other birds and even snakes.
Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of six national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex. Pocosin Lakes Visitor Center, located in Columbia, NC, is open 9am to 4pm whenever volunteer staffing is available.
