Caption: American Black Bears (Ursus americanus) live on and around Pocosin Lakes Refuge. They are omnivores, eating just about anything - animals, insects and plants, dead or alive. They are quick short range runners. And, they're adept climbers and swimmers. Safety and caution when around wildlife are good rules to follow. If you're taking photos, a telephoto lens can help keep you at a safe distance.
Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of nine national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex. Pocosin Lakes Visitor Center, located in Columbia, NC, is open 9am to 4pm whenever volunteer staffing is available.
