Caption: Early morning, with the sun rising behind and the moon setting ahead, this beautiful shot of a Great Blue Heron was seen basking in the dual lighting on Alligator River Refuge. There are plenty of Great Blue Herons at Pocosin Lakes Refuge too. Head to the Pungo Unit of Pocosin Lakes Refuge to not only see Great Blues, but a wide variety of birds. It's migration season and you never know what birds might stop in for a rest and a meal.

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of six national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex. Pocosin Lakes Visitor Center, located in Columbia, NC, is open 9am to 4pm whenever volunteer staffing is available.
