Applications To Be Taken for National Wildlife Refuge Fire Crew Positions

The Mountain/Prairie Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be accepting applications for seasonal wildland firefighter and prescribed fire crew member positions from December 3, 2000 until January 12, 2001. Applications received during this period will be used to fill firefighter jobs in the spring, summer, and fall of 2001. Positions may be filled at many of the National Wildlife Refuges and Wetland Management Districts in Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, and Montana.

Fire positions generally last three to six months. While many positions are filled by students just during the summer months, there are also a number of opportunities for employment early or late in the year as Refuge fire crews conduct prescribed burns in the spring and fall. Selected individuals can expect to work at a variety of refuges within the region and may be sent to other areas of the country on wildfire suppression or prescribed burning assignments. When not involved with fire-related activities, fire crews conduct natural resource projects to benefit wildlife.

United States citizens may apply, but must be 18 years of age at the time they are hired. No previous Federal experience is required. Selectees are required to pass an arduous physical fitness test which consists of being able to walk 3 miles with a 45 pound backpack in 45 minutes or less. Salaries range from around $7.98 to 12.19 per hour depending on previous experience and education. Many of the refuges in this region provide housing for their seasonal fire crews for a nominal fee.

More information on these jobs and application materials may be obtained from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Regional Office in Denver at (303)-236-8121 x 257, or by contacting any of the National Wildlife Refuge or Wetland Management District offices in your area.

Request Vacancy Announcement Number FWS6-OTR-01-455A. Applications must be postmarked by January 12, 2001. Information on these jobs can also be found in the Federal jobs website "USAJobs", Check under the "Clerical and Technical" heading of the "Current Job Openings" section, then select Physical & Biological Science, type "firefighter" in the keyword..
